There are two journeys in front of you. Both can lead to success, but only one can lead to purposeful fulfillment. The Actor as Fire and Cloud references Christian and secular thought as well as master teachers of this century and the past to unlock universal ideas about the acting craft. As such, it is a book with universal appeal and application.

The Actor as Fire and Cloud edition by John Wilson Arts Photography eBooks

I am an assistant professor of theatre at a small, private, Christian institution. We place a high level of importance on the integration of faith into every subject, and the arts are no exception. I am often looking for great texts to serve our discussions on the Christian walk as actors, and John's text wove perfectly with the course (particularly because it was for a Voice and Speech class, and he even covers Linklater technique in one chapter). He attempts to weave together both the secular and theological while pulling from seminal teachers of the craft. But what I appreciate most his the transparency with which John shares his own struggles and humanity - he does not seek to sugarcoat the struggle of the working artist. These are lessons I find highly valuable for those seeking to pursue the calling.

The Actor as Fire and Cloud edition by John Wilson Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

The world of the theatrical arts is not known for its relationship to Christianity, or religion in general, or is it? John Wilson's perspective on the acting craft as it relates to a personal relationship with Christ is vital to the mind of all performers. This book is filled with encouraging, yet challenging, concepts for a transformative new take on acting. Christian actors often crave affirmation of their career path, and "The Actor as Fire and Cloud" shines incredible light on the importance of Christian influence in the theatre. Performers young and old will love digging into this book. I received this book during my freshman year of college, and it could not have come at a better time. Professors, Directors, Actors, Technicians, and even regular theatre-goers alike will benefit greatly from reading this book.
Hugh Jackman. Evangeline Lilly. Emma Watson. Mark Wahlberg. All prominent actors. All professed Christians. As a fan of the stage and screen, I have often wondered at how they balance their faith with performing roles that might be thought to compromise their values. After all, since the opening of the first theater, the stage and the church have been in conflict. Actors have proclaimed themselves artists who are merely portraying a role, telling a story or bringing attention to the human condition. Clergy have cried foul, claiming the stage the house of Satan and actors so many demons playing on the perversity of mankind. So how does one balance his passion for the stage with his faith? How does she overcome the dissonance between "acting in the world" while "living by the word"?

In "The Actor as Fire and Cloud", University of Central Missouri professor John Wilson draws on his own faith and his experience as an actor and director to provide hope for actors and actresses, both novice and professional, as they seek balance. Wilson is completely transparent in sharing his own struggles and triumphs. He addresses concepts such as humility, listening and being in the present, defining one's worldview, and advancing the kingdom while being true to the story. He answers questions about balancing intimacy while being true to one's spouse, dealing with profanity, and making decisions about when to stick with a job and when, because of personal convictions, to walk away.

"The Actor as Fire and Cloud" is more than just another "how to" textbook on acting. It is a thought-provoking look into one's own soul as he or she creates art while serving a higher calling. Wilson masterfully challenges and inspires while addressing a topic others have dared not venture. Each chapter is followed by table talk topics to encourage discussion as the reader takes the journey into a Godly perspective on the stage.
The Actor as Fire and Cloud is one of the most insightful and empowering books I have ever read in my educational career, and I guarantee that there will not be another more intricately written book about the coalition of spirituality and the art of acting unless Mr. Wilson writes a similar book. As a first-year college student, this book offered me abundant encouragement and newfound wisdom amongst a spiraling vortex of alternative ideas and negativity seen in everyday life. From the beginning of the book, the author never hid God’s Word behind a theatrical mask, but rather elevated Biblical narratives to a new level of importance while offering subtle techniques to enhance ones acting and spiritual arsenal. Overall, Mr. Wilson emphasizes the point of putting God first in the context of his writing. When conveying meaningful truth, Mr. Wilson is emotionally honest, and his personal stories, both heart wrenching and occasionally comical, kept me invested in each lesson presented. I would encourage every actor, regardless of religious affiliation, to read this book before they step into their next role as it will offer new knowledge on how to improve their craft and heighten their sense of awareness on and off the stage. Overall, Mr. Wilson’s book has offered me a new goal in life To faithfully advance the Kingdom by living truthfully under both real AND imaginary circumstances.
I am totally enjoying this book. It's not only for those involved in theater, like me. I find the author's thoughts and words to be very helpful in my daily walk of faith.
It is a rare book on acting that starts with a chapter on humility, but that is just one component of what makes this book a powerful read. In "The Actor As Fire And Cloud" John Wilson doesn't stop with giving practical advice on acting technique but combines the practical with the spiritual making something that is much more than the sum of its parts. In applying biblical principles to acting, he has not only enabled the actor to dive deeper into the soul of their characters but has elevated the whole art form to a divine calling. This book would be an excellent resource for any actor, regardless of faith. It would also be a blessing to any Christian artist, regardless of medium.
I fully enjoyed reading this myself about a year ago. I enjoyed it so much that I purchased it for my graduating seniors as a gift on closing night of this years school play. It will possibly be the gift for my graduating seniors each year.
