I'm sorry I didn't like this sci-fi novel. Leigh Brackett was a hugely talented and prolific story writer, novelist, and screenwriter and I admire her for that. But some people like one thing and some like other things, and this just wasn't the science fiction novel I was expecting, and not the kind that I like. The novel's title and blurb led me to expect something totally different, maybe something like Fred Pohl's Gateway e.g. But it read, to me, like a 1950s hardboiled tough-guy private eye novel (and she wrote some of those), not a space opera or even a space adventure. The whole tone of the novel is dark (noir?), gloomy, even depressing. If you like that sort of thing, then you may very well enjoy The Big Jump. Even the title evokes hardboiled crime novels, and its interesting that Leigh Brackett co-wrote the screenplay for Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep. Bottom line -- if you want a sci-fi novel that reads like Hammett or Chandler, The Big Jump might be for you. It just wasn't what I was looking for.Product details

Back in the 1950's, when this was written, Leigh Brackett was "the Queen of the Pulps", a writer for Weird Tales and Planet Stories, as well as a Hollywood scriptwriter with The Big Sleep under her belt. She wrote this for an Ace double, I think, and its truly a novella rather than a whole novel - although it is now reprinted as such. Still, don't let that hold you back this is fantasticly evocative piece, a character-driven drama in a sci-fi setting, from the cold dusty roads of Mars to an enchanted garden on the Moon, to the first world visited by man outside the solar system - the trip there being the "Big Jump" of the title.
Brackett specialised in gritty dirty semi-heroes and characters of many moral hues in settings that make Blade Runner's LA look like paradise. The protagonist here, Arch Comyn, is a hard-living tough, with his only redeeming feature being loyalty to a friend. He's driven, reckless, and doesn't have a lot - if anything - to lose. The book opens with Comyn investigating the loss of his friend on the first Big Jump 5 men left, and only one came back, dying, mad and babbling about...things. The atmosphere in the opening is redolent of the movie Event Horizon of 15 years back, and is pretty well done. Comyn deals with that horror, only to run up against a powerful corporation run by a ruthless family, and a beautiful, if broken, girl who is a member of said family.
The only solution to all of this is to go on the second Big Jump - and just when you think Brackett cannot have enough pages left in the story, she does we see Barnard's Star in all its glory, and have an ending pretty neatly wrapped up, too. Throw in some wondefully cinematic moments, and it's a nicely told little tale. Maybe for modern readers it's a little light on female parts, but don't let that stop you picking it up.

I really tried to like this since it was on a list of one of the Best SF Novels Ever! It was just sooo macho. I understand times change (thank goodness), but I was expecting more from this. CNF. Sorry, Leigh.
