2.5 stars

Shelby and Matt started dating in junior high and made big plans for their future after high school graduation. Instead, Shelby decides to dump Matt right before she goes to college thinking she's giving him a better shot at his dreams without worrying about her and their unexpected surprise. Fast forward ten years later, Shelby is a successful journalist for a sports magazine-under a pseudonym-and Matt has made a name for himself as an MMA fighter. Shelby is picked to do an article about Matt, she just doesn't realize it's him until he's walking into the restaurant.

Although it's been 10 years, Shelby and Matt pick up as if the missing years never happened. They have some emotional ups and downs while readjusting to each other's life's, but nothing overly dramatic. They also get to deal with Kyle, the crazy MMA fighter who wants to mess with Matt enough to lose focus on an upcoming match and get his title back. Kyle's part provided a weird suspense line that only seemed to crop up whenever things appear to be settled between Matt and Shelby.

I had a few hiccups with how quickly Matt and Shelby got back together and the implied maturity level was off base (some scenes made me think of junior high drama instead of late 20 year olds). The romance didn't feel steamy, instead it felt like wearing a comfortable blanket at the end of a rough day. Overall, the story started out great, fizzled in the middle, yet managed to end on a good note.

Fighting for Love A Second Chances standalone Volume 4 LP Dover Melissa Ringsted Mae I Design Books Reviews

Plot has already been stated many times by other reviewers. I can't do better.

What was likeable about this book?
- Liked the historical references to Shelby and Matt's childhood. How they knew each other as teenagers. Things they did together. That was great. Gave them both depth - and made they more compelling of a couple.
- They seemed to be a great match. Wanted to see them get their HEA
- Both people were very likeable
- Loved how bad the bad guy was
- HEA
- No cliffhanger
- When they hit their big 'issue', they still talked it out a bit and tried to give each other space. No major running away. Hate that.

What I didn't like?
- They didn't see each other for 10 years, then bam! insta-relove. No 'getting to know you'. What you've been up to. Just picked up where it was left off. If they really pined for each other so much - why didn't they try to find each other and contact one another?
- the BIG 'secret'. It's annoying when the H or h is hiding a big secret and you wonder how it's going to come out. The manner in which is came out was way too predictable

But as I always say - if you know what you are getting into with these type of romance novels, then you won't be overly disappointed. This is a romance-lite and it hits the spot when you need one of those...
Matt and Shelby were completely in love. Matt thought they had it all, he was going to make Shelby his wife but the day before he was going to ask her she dropped him. Told him he wasn't good enough and she got out of the car. He lost her, the only women he would ever love and she was gone.

Shelby has always regretted leaving Matt. He was her only true love, but she had to, she wanted him to have the life he wanted and she couldn't, wouldn't be the reason he was held back.

10 years later, Shelby is in her dream job, she is a journalist for Physique Sports and Fitness Magazine. She lives for her job. Her new interview is the last person she ever expected to see again. The only man she has ever loved, the one that she has never stopped loving.

Matt is at the top of his game. He is one of the best MMA fighters around. The up and coming spread for Physique Sports and Fitness Magazine is just the thing he needs to keep him on the top. Walking in to the restaurant for his first meeting with the journalist and his manager he never expected to crash into his past, but now that he had crashed into Shelby Dawson he is not going to let go again. She was and is the only women he will ever love.

Can Matt and Shelby find their way back, can the pick up the pieces of their love and move forward together or will the secrets of their past ruin their future?
I must preface this review by saying that I was so excited to run across this author's books. I found them well written, enjoyable, with enough human drama and steamy moments to keep my interest until the last page was turned (swiped on my e-reader). Unlike a lot of contemporary stories today, her heroines are intelligent adult women, with backbone, interesting backgrounds, and abundant layers to their characters. Their male counterparts are equally intelligent alpha males who are receptive to their partners without being irrational. No teenage drama, immaturity, or stupidity..... until I downloaded this book. I honestly cannot believe it was written by the same person. The teenage angst and over the top drama killed what could of been a nicely told story. The h's maturity level in this book was so infantile that she was not relatable. A big premise of the book was the secret which in fact, was overblown. Instead of creating a sympathetic situation, it emphasized her inability to handle issues as an adult and make decisions that came across more as self serving than anything else. The H was a rehash of other MMA fighters. In fact, just a few chapters in the tone and the language of this story reminded me of another MMA story which I deleted from my e-reader. The sex....well lets just say there was no build up or tension here. This was more like insta-sex.
I normally do not post reviews. When I read something I do not care for, I normally return it or simply forward to the trash bin. I do not like posting negative reviews because this is someone's work. No one spends hours trying to publish a story to have someone shoot it down. But I honestly hope that this is just a fluke and that the writer will return to the quality of her previous works of which she has demonstrated she is capable of doing.
