The Urban Shepherd Chasing the American Dream Ben Amor 9781457545344 Books
I requested a review copy of Ben Amor's book, believing that I would be reading a memoir of his early life in Tunisia--a country about which I know very little. I anticipated learning about Tunisian culture and about the American immigrant experience. I understood, as well, that Amor had started a charitable organization dedicated to feeding hungry children, and I was curious to know more about this.I read one-tenth of The Urban Shepherd before calling it quits. First of all, I found the liberal sprinkling of "think-and-grow-rich" style quotations from supposedly inspirational businessmen very off-putting. I know I'm the wrong audience for exhortations about success and getting rich--along the lines of "Believe in yourself, and commit to your dreams." The writing was of poor quality, confusing at times, and in need of some serious revision and editing. The author needed to get more feedback as to what his (North American) readers might like to know about his life, and he needed to provide specific, vivid details beyond cliche. Creating a book with a professional writer would have been the best approach for Amor to tell his story and get his message across effectively.
I did learn a little about the fairly high childhood mortality rate and the low quality of education for Arab Tunisians prior to Independence in 1956 (when the country was a French colony). For Muslim children who did attend school, six years of education was typical. Few Arab children had much exposure to (and knowledge of) French, which was the ticket to higher education.
Sadly, because the writing was of poor quality and the observations so general and underwhelming (e.g. "gaining knowledge and acquiring a sense of self-awareness are priceless") I had no will to invest further time in the book.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for providing me we a digital copy of the book. I regret that I was not able to complete it.

The Urban Shepherd Chasing the American Dream Ben Amor 9781457545344 Books Reviews
Embark on a heartwarming, exhilarating, and at times tear-jerking journey with Ben Amor as he takes you on an intimate tour of his life in his memoir, The Urban Shepherd Chasing the American Dream. Between the pages of this very well-written book, you'll be inspired with words of wisdom to empower you to stare down your obstacles and prevail over them. Life is about growing, and to grow properly, one has to seize every opportunity to learn. You'll find this and many other important truths illustrated throughout Urban Shepherd.
Ben's moving story began one summer day in Tunisia, where he arrived to this world to a loving but impoverished family. Growing up, he and his family of seven lived and slept in a single room made of dirt and wheat stalks called a gourbi which his father built. When it rained, water would seep through the roof and leak on the family. For shoes, he wore tires fastened around his feet with cords. While he might not have had a solid roof over his head or proper shoes on his feet, he did have a fiery spirit, and it's this inner fire that propelled him to rise above his challenges to achieve his big dreams.
Ben's dreams began one day while he tended to his family's livestock, as boys at five were expected to do. When he lifted up his head, he saw trails in the sky that were formed by rapidly moving specks which he later learned were airplanes. That sight flamed in him a vision, a vision to explore the world outside, a vision to attain "something better and bigger than what and who I was."
As God's Word says, "Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest." (Ecclesiastes 114, NLT) Being a precocious child brought up by a hardworking father and clever mother, Ben knew this principle at an early age that we must seize every opportunity to learn and obtain knowledge, for if we wait for the "perfect moment" or the "right time," it may never come. Thus, when his maternal uncle opened to him a chance to go to school, he seized the opportunity. Despite having to walk two miles to school with no socks or a coat to protect him from the chilly bite of winter months, he persisted with education, and it paid off, projecting him forward to achieving his dreams. With a spirit of dogged determination, he graduated college to become an electrician, joined the air force where he fixed complex radio issues, and on the soil of America, founded a non-profit organization, Terra-Genesis, to fight world hunger using high-tech communication technology. His organization came into being in response to a nightmare he had! Yes, Ben has an aptitude to make things happen, to fix what is broken, and to defy the odds because he understands the importance of taking calculated risks, of personal accountability, of learning from one's mistakes, and he knows the fact that we are not in this world just for our own sake but for the betterment of humanity. He is no mere dreamer; he turns his understanding and knowledge into action. That's how he's able to achieve the American dream, not just chase it.
While reading the fascinating journey of Ben, a spectrum of emotions flooded me. Tears came to my eyes when I envisioned his challenges and the way he overcame all of them. I inwardly nodded in agreement when he shared his thoughts or "secrets" to success. If you need a boost of motivation or empowerment (don't we all?), this book is for you, regardless of which stage of dreaming you're in, whether at the planning stage or on top of your mountain. When Ben shares his experiences with you, be prepared to be inspired to action, to take steps forward, and to continue achieving as Ben does. We can never have too many dreams or achieve too much. There is always more room to advance your spirit further, to dream bigger, and to fly higher.
Inspiring..
After reading his story, if you were born here in America and keep finding excuses to not BE MOTIVATED then you won't find any reason not to "see it through" after you learn of his story.
I loved the book. What a story that shows how we all can become self empowered to succeed.
A practical and real story on how to overcome challenges.
If he did it then you and I can also...read the book and get motivated...
Ben Amor brings the passion to this book. Many good ideas, insights, and motivational stories that spoke to me. This book was the catalyst for me re-inventing my life and fully understand that I can choose to be, do, and have whatever I want. This is a great book for people seeking to improve themselves and their life situation.
