The New System by Sam Jane Brown is the second book in the Zena McGrath series. Zena is a senior detective in Dublin assigned to find those who still practice religion in a world that is mostly run by the new world government, WorldGov. Religion is strictly forbidden and Zena is a most unusual choice for her assignment seeing that until recently she did not believe in God or satan. Everyone is now watched by technology that can video, eavesdrop, and read lips. No place is exempt from the government’s prying eyes: homes, workplaces, restaurants, and automobiles all give up the most intimate of details. Anyone speaking of religion or of discontent with the government is arrested, never to be seen again. The President of the World is satan in the body of a woman and she, along with 4,000 of the wealthiest and most privileged rule through fear. They live lavishly, condemn anyone beneath their station in life, and live free from all surveillance. Everyone else is controlled by an embedded chip that WorldGov uses to control everything about their lives, down to their very ability to shop for food. This is a book about good vs evil and how Zena is pulled into the plot by forces that she never suspects. Follow Zena; a group of geeks; and four young rebels who just want the freedom to think for themselves as they all progress through a series of seemingly unrelated events that eventually bring freedom to everyone. See how the force for evil gets fed up with humanity and in a surprising twist uses a few unsuspecting individuals to carry out its plan. All but one of the 4,000 get the surprise of their lives as they attend a meeting led by two women—two women whose identity will blow your mind! The Bible plays a very important role in this book and its origin is totally different from what religion has always taught. I loved this book because of the possibilities that it brought to light, and even though it could make some doubt, remember that it is fiction.Tags : The New System - Kindle edition by Sam Jane Brown. The New System edition by Sam Jane Brown Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This was a very interesting book with a lot going on. First off, I don't know if it's just my ereader, but the whole book was backwards. I had to swipe left to turn the page, not to the right. I'm not sure if that was by design or not.
The whole concept of how people are living in the world and why is imaginative yet rooted in real world issues, which made it read almost like a warning. It was an intriguing take on how humanity could progress in the future if there was such a strong attitude taken toward eradicating the practice of religions.
There were a lot of characters, a lot of places, and a lot of religions mentioned in the book. I found that some of the history of some places was hard for me to follow, but that just meant I had to read slower. It's evident the author has done her research and I trust that she has her information right about different countries and historical events.
I thought the chapters about the President of the world were probably the most captivating, in the least for finding out who she really is. There was a sort of fantastical touch to it but, with the story being about writing a new bible from which humanity is meant to take its direction, the fantastic elements near the end with the President and Vice-President worked.
There was really great writing throughout. The author found a good balance between the details of each scene, character development, the details of the world as it is, the backstory of how it came to be that way. It could have been a big mess had there been too many details that bogged the story down or if there hadn't been enough, leaving you confused at where the story was jumping. I thought it was well-paced, with the revelation of details and the skipping between character perspectives coming at the right times.
I kind of really liked that the ending, although climatic and massive in scale when you consider that the publication of the documents in the newspaper and the new bible brought about a complete change in the entire world and freed almost everyone, wasn't a nail-biter. (Spoiler) Zena transfers the documents and it takes a while for the changes to happen. She's not sneaking into the newspaper office in the middle of the night, almost getting caught by authorities. Although there is very real life-or-death conflict for characters, this wasn't an action novel at any point, including at the climax. Still, it had a good feeling of resolution. I think it's hard to navigate that sort of approach to writing, and I think the author did it well.
The New System is an entertaining, imaginative novel set mainly in a dystopian Dublin, Ireland where the world is governed by the astonishingly wealthy who have established a one world government, view technology as a religion, suppress all dissent through fear, and subjugate the poor to eternal poverty. The book is well- crafted, with an intriguing plot, interesting characters, and twists and turns one does not expect, but is pleased when they happen. Moreover, from a literary standpoint it also has excellent prose. But, by far the book's best attribute is its characters. This is especially true when it comes to the protagonist Zena McGrath who is a very able, smart and sympathetic person, and Satan (That is right we are talking about the Devil here.) who is disguised as a manipulative, extremely attractive woman that can bend anyone to her will. Both Zena, and Satan are well developed creations that it becomes fun to follow.
The book contains very few defects. I suppose the only one that I took issue with is that there is a lack of exposition in the beginning. Since, The New System takes place in a world somewhat different from our own, it is a little difficult to discern how that world operates. As a result, at the start of the book I found myself trying to comprehend such an unfamiliar world and still follow the story, which can be a little frustrating. Still, this small blemish does not take away from the book's facets too much.
So, if you like dystopian novels or are interested in reading something a little different, you should try The New System. If you do, you will be in for a bit of an adventure.
