Historian Lillian Faderman has been a pathbreaker with her research and writing about women’s role in US history and the cultural and social context in which LGBT people have negotiated their place in American society. To Believe in Women is one of Faderman’s earlier works, and it has informed and inspired other historians and writers to research further into these realms. I have benefited greatly by her research and histories in my own writing.

To Believe in Women focuses on four public realms in which lesbians have had greatest impact: voting rights for women, social justice, education, and the professions. Within each area Faderman profiles women who were some of the most influential public figures of their times. What’s interesting, of course, is how many of these women are not known to the public as being lesbians. Their full lives have often been hidden from history -- sometimes by the women themselves who felt they must do so to have any public influence. In this work Faderman presented these women to the public, and in doing so, ensured that lesbians found their rightful place in women’s history and in the story of the United States.

To Believe in Women What Lesbians Have Done For America A History Lillian Faderman Professor Lillian Faderman 9780618056972 Books Reviews

A heterosexual feminist ally, I picked up this book at the suggestion of a friend, and was entranced by the premise of the book and meticulously researched evidence.
Precisely because they were not bound by unintended pregnancy (which continued to be a problem until the early 70's)Lesbians were the vanguard of the women's movement on everything from equal employment to the vote and birth control, and had an obligation to work towards policies that would benefit all women regardless of sexuality.
Granted some readers of the reviews will decide that this book attempts to glorify lesbians at the expense of straight women, but I have read this book repeatedly and simply find the truth as it existed in historical context. Faderman simply points out the important role that Lesbians have played---a contribution that gets over shaddowed in many straight women's and gay men's focused history books.
Professor Faderman has written a book that should be required curriculum for every public high school to teach women the incalculable debt owed to the gay women came before us and opened doors to women's rights, higher education, medicine, social work and the law. The accounts of the intimate partnerships of these women and their fierce determination and dedication to their cause(s) will educate and raise the awareness of those who, like me, were knowledgeable of bits and pieces of this story, but who had never had the whole so masterfully laid out before them. At a time when LGBT involvement in American history is still just beginning to be taught and is also still openly repressed in many areas this book is essential reading. Ms Faderman has helped provide a foundation to lesbian history in America. I have found my heroes, they are women and they are lesbians.
important book containing valuable social history.
Fantastic resource to lesbian history. This author does not mess around. She is known for great detailed research and this book is no exception. Even one who knows women's history will learn so much.
This is a must read for anyone interested in the suffragette movement and its gives you a fantastic understanding about the amazing strong women that are covered in the book.
Faderman writes so well, I found a used copy and it is fascinating enough that I downloaded the version too (it's cheap). I'd never really studied the suffragists as such, which is just chapter one, as far as I got on vacation. She focusses on one woman from each era to the present and structures the work around them to explain their eras and accomplishments.
Lillian Faderman is, hands down, THE best researcher and writer of lesbian American history EVER. I own a copy of all her books; each gets better than the last. And this one continues the trend -- it is simply wonderful. A great read and an important historical document.
