!!**possible spoiler**!!This was a great setup to KA Linde’s upcoming release, Cruel Money. I enjoyed this early snippet of meeting Penn and Natalie. However, there was one BIG problem I had with the story that I couldn’t get passed. Natalie is a virgin (she has fooled around with guys before) but there is NO pain when she and Penn had sex. Well, at least nothing was mentioned. She never even thought about the initial discomfort! There was also NO mention from Natalie or Penn about her being a virgin AFTER sex...no "why didn't you tell me?", no "additional clean-up" after the act.
Uhhhh....WHAT?! There should have been some recognition of this on both their parts before, during, or after.
I had to take away a star for that but otherwise this prequel is a great lead in and certainly builds the WANT and DESIRE to continue Penn and Natalie's story in Cruel Money!

One Cruel Night edition by KA Linde Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I love reading books about Paris. It’s a bucket list item for me but I’ve been there several times in books. This time Paris was explored with Natalie and Amy who are BFF’s and are house sitting for the summer for an aunt before the girls go to college. They manage to crash a party the last night of their stay and although Amy already has a guy waiting, Natalie isn’t interested in anyone at the party until she sees an almost familiar man.
The man catches Natalies eye and stroll toward her. He’s a guy she has seen several times near where she’s staying. Introductions are made and the two hit it off and decide to leave the party and really explore Paris.
Penn takes Natalie to some of the places she’s seen as a tourist but he takes her to them by sneaking in or tells her stories of the area she’s not heard before.
Penn and Natalie both see themselves as weird or different from what’s expected of them and that seems to connect them. A hot passionate night is shared but Penn wakes up to bad news and rushes from his apartment without waking Natalie. When Natalie wakes and finds Penn gone, she feels hurt and humiliated. I guess the next book is going to explain if they ever meet again or if their time was just a wistful night in Paris.
“Paris is a thief … It steals a piece of your heart every time you come here."
Two strangers. Both American. One perfect night in Paris. A young man and a coed cross paths a magical night. NATALIE (18) is on the last night of fully experiencing the City of Lights with her best friend before starting college when she runs into an enigmatic guy she’s frequently seen in the park. In a romantic night that she will never forget, they share everything that’s meaningful, not superficial … and PENN (25) lets down his walls for her to see real person underneath. What could go wrong?
Paris IS the city of romance, and this novella prequel to the upcoming CRUEL TRILOGY couldn’t have a better setting to start the series. This is not travelogue romance. Everywhere they go and what they do charmed the pants off me. After her dismal BLOOD TYPE series, I thought the author had lost her touch. But, this book totally redeems her in my eyes and I hope that there’s enough story here to justify a trilogy.
Romantic setting? Check. Intriguing setup? Check. Compelling lovers? Check. The prequel is the perfect length and really gets down to business in introducing this couple to us. I was as besotted with Paris, the romance, and Penn as Natalie was. There seemed to be a mistake that I think the author did on purpose. **Spoilerish** … Penn never notices any proof of Natalie losing her virginity, but this oversight is probably intentional to make it an important revelation later on.
The romance is great so far and one of my favorite tropes. Can't wait to see what happens next in this steamy, romantic adventure.
One Cruel Night by K.A. Linde is a prequel to her new Cruel Trilogy. The first full novel of the trilogy will be Cruel Money, and it’s due out January 22, 2019. I’m currently reading the first book in the trilogy, and I’m glad I read the prequel first. (Readers don’t have to read the prequel though before Cruel Money.) I prefer to read prequels because I love how prequels can introduce to characters and how they first met or even provide us with some of the storylines that will flow right into the first full-length novel. In the case of One Cruel Night is a look back to how Natalie met Penn in Paris, France.
Natalie is in Paris but hasn’t experienced it, and she’s due to leave soon to go back to the states for school. She ends up meeting a gorgeous stranger who she has seen previously in the park. Natalie hasn’t had many adventures in her life, until now when she meets the gorgeous stranger at a party. He’s willing to show her around Paris since she hasn’t experienced the city yet and she’s due to leave soon for the states.
Since this a short novella, I don’t want to give too much away. You don’t have to read One Cruel Night to read Cruel Money when it’s due out this month. Although, you may miss out on some very steamy moments between the two main characters. You’ll also miss out on some the adventures that Natalie goes on when the gorgeous stranger shows her around, and then she does something out of the normal for her.
Natalie is sweet and innocent, and the stranger is mysterious and handsome. Both complete opposites, but fate has put them in the same spot together, so Natalie can finally experience life outside of her innocent world.
Overall, this is an excellent opener to the Cruel Trilogy. I’m looking forward to diving into Cruel Money and find out what happens next to the characters.
I give the book 5 stars and also give it another 5 stars with the steaminess of some of the scenes between the characters. It may be a short novella, but it provides enough insight into the world that K.A. Linde has written.
If you are anxiously waiting for Cruel Money to release, then I highly recommend reading the novella first. It’s FREE currently as of 1.10.2019.
